Depression can be short lived or be a pervading feeling that can last for months. Depression can affect people of any age, gender, or socio-economic standing. It causes serious changes in a person's feelings, outlook, and can interfere with the way a person functions in their everyday life. It causes pain and suffering to the sufferer and also to those who care about them. Depression may vary from mild or temporary to severe and prolonged.

Symptoms of Depression

Depression has a variety of symptoms and not everyone experiences every symptom. Severity of symptoms varies with individuals and also varies over time. Do you experience any of the following symptoms?

    • Persistent sadness, anxiety, or "empty mood"
    • Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
    • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
    • Decreased energy, fatigue
    • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
    • Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed
    • Loss of libido or sexual drive
    • Changes in appetite or weight
    • Loss of motivation
    • Thoughts of death or suicide, suicide attempts
    • Restlessness, irritability
    • Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
    • Physical aches and pains
