Depression

Depression is often not recognised or treated. Depression is more than just low mood. Individuals suffering from depression find it hard to function every day as the symptoms cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning.

Symptoms of depression include:

• Feeling sad most of the time

• Loss of interest or pleasure in most activities

• Loss of confidence

• Feeling tired all the time

• Sleep difficulties

• Feeling of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt nearly everyday

• Difficulties in concentrating

• Having recurrent thoughts of death

Individuals suffering from depression often don’t see the point of doing anything and may feel that no one can really help. They do not get better on their own. It is important that they let others know how they are feeling and seek professional help.

Both psychological treatments and medication have been found to be effective in treating depression. Psychological treatments such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy help individuals cope with their difficulties. Through therapy, the individual will learn how to  change unhelpful thoughts and start functioning again.
